The Research/Writing assignment requires students to study an artwork by an artist (one that is not included in the textbook) of their choice from a library resource or from a local museum, gallery or online exhibition and discuss the formal elements and the principles of composition as well as discuss the artwork in relation to a specific section in the textbook that you think it relates to. For Example: discussing Barbara Kruger’s Untitled (if it wasn’t in the textbook) in the context of the section Sexuality, Politics and Consumerism.
You could use the thematic sections in the last few chapters of the text, even though we won’t be getting to them in class. Give examples of the artwork included in the section and compare/contrast to the artwork of your choice, make sure you clearly explain why the artwork you chose can be discussed within that particular section.
Sources for artists and information may include film, books, legitimate web sources (meaning museum websites and professional publications). You may also find your artist from visiting a local museum or gallery. Our textbook, as well as outside sources will be necessary to use. When you visit a local museum or gallery, you will need to speculate using what we have learned so far, what the artist is intending or where their ideas may come from, influences etc. I recommend trying to dig a little deeper and find out as much as you can about the artist or artwork you are viewing.
Visit the Jones Library and the GCC to get help with research and writing. Information for the GCC is below.
The essay must include your opinions/individual responses to the artwork, as well as historical/factual information from the textbook, and other legitimate sources. If you can find biographical/historical information about the artist or style of the artwork, you should use that too.
