You will choose one work (painting, sculpture, building, or art object) and give a description of it that includes the following:
all logistical information o artist’s name

a description of the subject of the work (unless it is a building) o what is the story?
o who are the characters?
o what else appears in the work or is otherwise happening?
how it relates to the artist’s other works and to its time
o is it typical of the artist’s other works or is it a departure?
o Is it typical of the period in which is was created or is it a departure?
a stylistic description of the work
o describe the composition
o describe the use of color
o do a formal analysis that describes the composition, the color, etc. o how the artist engages with naturalism
accuracy of anatomy and figural poses
facial expressions and physiognomy
use of light and shadow to create volume [2D/painting only]
how space is conveyed [2D (includes relief) only]
use of linear perspective [2D (includes relief) only]
use of aerial perspective and/or atmospheric qualities [2D/painting only]
o describe the overall feeling of the work
why you chose this work (personal reaction)
o explain why you chose the work
o do you like it? find it weird? think it’s interesting? is the subject meaningful? did
it teach you something about the practice of art (drawing/painting) or about life
o your opinions and personal comments are welcome!
About the work of art you choose:
it cannot be one of the works we go over in depth in class, especially if it is a work that you might have to talk about on the exam
you can choose any work from the Italian Renaissance, between the 1300s and the 1500s (but from nowhere outside the Italian Renaissance)
