Using the topic and research from the previous assignment, that attempts to persuade a specific audience of your position on that topic. In some cases, you will need to convince to your audience what your topic is and why it should matter to them.
Genre
A position argument articulates and advances an informed point of view about an issue of personal or social importance. Your paper should show evidence of research and use the available means to persuade your audience of the importance of your position.
Audience
Your audience should be a single person who is capable of being persuaded on your chosen subject. Your chosen audience should be someone who does not already agree with you or is unaware of a certain issue. Options for choosing an audience could include a friend, family member, boss, instructor, representative, etc.
Your role is to establish common ground with your audience, acknowledge and respond to possible counterarguments, and appeal to your audience’s reason, values, and emotions.
Process
Your introduction should succinctly outline the background information of your argument. Define the issue you’re addressing, explain why you’re addressing this particular audience, and provide a coherent thesis statement that informs your audience of your position and the organization of your argument.
In your body present the reasons that support your position. Reinforce your reasons with details, examples, scenarios, and experience. Represent other positions and counterarguments fairly. You are expected to maintain an appropriate tone that demonstrates a willingness to engage in productive dialogue about a contested issue.
Be sure to use all of the available means of persuasion that are now at your disposal. Use appeals to ethos, pathos, and logos, and rhetorical methods of development to effectively engage with and persuade your audience.
End with a call to action or an invitation to think or act differently in response to this issue. Your conclusion should consider the broader implications of your opinion and leave the audience with a sense of urgency about your persuasive purpose.
Length
Final drafts should be 1,200-1,600 words. Works cited do not count towards the length of the paper.
Format
Your argument can take the form of either an academic essay, a memo, or a personal letter depending on which would be the most fitting response based on your audience.
In either case your final draft should be double-spaced, 12 pt Times New Roman font, 1” margins, and attach a works cited page in MLA format.
Grading Criteria
Appropriately addresses a single audience that is able to persuaded.
Includes a thesis statement that articulates your position about this issue clearly.
Supports your position with good reasons and specific, convincing evidence.
Effectively uses the available means of persuasion.
Follows specified formatting conventions.
1600 words max prefer top keep at at 5 maybe 6 pages tops, do not use over big terms I wouldn’t normally use. I recently went on a trip to michigan where marijuana is legal and It opened my eyes to some of the benefits and changed my point of view of marijuana not being just for stoners but also for a medical benefit
