benefits of meditation for college students

Essay #1, Draft #1

Read the directions for Essay #1 posted in Module D. Essays that deviate from those directions will not earn credit. So no essays about legalizing marijuana. This essay must be a proposal connected to meditation. Your goal is to make your essay different from all the others about meditation by using the concepts of audience, remixing, and three-part thesis statements.

The expectations for the final draft are laid out in the Checklist for Essay #1. The student who consults it throughout the writing process will almost certainly earn a higher grade than the one who ignores it. Yes, the checklist is long and verbose. But a research essay has plenty of parts. None is hard to learn or do well by itself. But it is easy to forget one of the dozens of things that your professors will quickly notice if its not there or done poorly.

Drafts are drafts. Write first; think later. If you’re using an outline, like the one from last week, you can begin anywhere. A draft is a start, so do not expect more from it than that. What you don’t like now, you’ll be able to change with later effort. For me, when I grade these, I am looking to see how well you understand the parts of a research essay.

Full Credit Expectations

· 600 plus words not counting the header and Works Cited page. 599 words or less earns a zero.

· Correct document format.

· A correctly formatted Works Cited page. Review the Works Cited on the student example in Module D—it’s correct in all aspects. NoodleTools is your buddy for this. Module B has a short video on setting up an account and covers the main features that will put you on the path to becoming an expert user.

· Three sources. These can come from the list at the end of this document or be ones you have chosen yourself. If the latter, those sources must meet the criteria on the Essay #1 Checklist in Module D. By the final draft, you will have chosen sources beyond what I’ve provided to support your thesis.

· Direct quotations and paraphrases. You can’t paraphrase all your sources, or quote them all either. Show me that you can do both. You must cite each of your three sources at least once in the draft or it doesn’t count as a source.

· Your draft thesis. Even if this draft does not have an introduction, provide the thesis. It should be a three-part thesis as covered in the thesis assignment.

· After you’ve finished the draft, you have to read it. This is the hardest part of writing. But you have to do it. Read it once without changing anything. Read it again, change whatever you feel you could say better, fix the typos, and apply the advice from the Stephen King essay. This is the iteration loop in action: And if you read your draft and see that nothing needs to be changed, go find a parent. Read your paper aloud to them. You’ll find that the draft is no longer perfect.

Extra Credit Expectations

Do all of the above; submit 900 plus words instead of 600 plus words; earn 10 extra credit points. You do not have to add sources. Extra credit can only be earned for submissions turned in by the due date. If you miss this opportunity, you can turn in 1800 words next week, earning 20 extra credit points.

Sources for Essay #1

These are the same sources from the bibliography assignment. You can use or replace them as you see fit. By the final draft you must have two books sources (I’ve given one below). You also will need to seek out other sources, ones that connect to your remix topic or the characteristics of the audience, to support your thesis. You can do this on your own or work with a librarian. You can schedule an appointment here: Of all the resources at this college or any other, the librarians are the surest ticket to graduation. They will cut out so much time from the research process. Do not take selecting sources for granted. It’s hard work. The librarians will lead you straight to the best available in the databases and ebook collections.
