-Please pick a few specific areas of influence to focus on in your essay.
-Make sure your focus is on within U.S. lessons in this essay and compare what you thought prior to this course with what you know now. If you choose to answer numbers 1 & 2, be careful to discuss difference areas of influence in each essay (i.e., DO NOT BE REDUNDANT).

Quality of Response
The Response should be a direct response to the prompt, so I will be evaluating whether the student does so or if, in contrast, the students is not directly addressing the two prompts. In addition, this criteria evaluates whether your response demonstrates critical thinking on the issue.

20/20 indicates that you directly responded to the prompts and impressively demonstrated critical thought on the topic.

15/20 indicates that you responded to the prompts, but (a) missed at least one major element in the prompts or (b) gave oversimplified answers for critical thought expected in this essay.

10/20 indicates that you did not directly respond to the prompts or your answer was insufficient. However, it is possible to get below a 10/20. This will happen when the essay includes one major or multiple minor inaccuracies.

Evidence/Support/Examples
This criteria is an evaluation of how much class material is used and how well it is used to give evidence or support to the student’s answer. I suggest direct citations from the readings (with quotes when appropriate), including dates, geographic information, examples, specific demographic data, or etc.

The points for this question are directly related to whether you included enough specific evidence and examples to support your essays.

25/25 means that you impressively supported your answers.

20/25 means that you satisfactorily supported your answers.

15/25 means that you offered some tertiary or limited evidence and examples. It may also indicate at least one area in which your evidence and/or examples were inappropriate or inapplicable.

10/25 suggests that you did not offer satisfactory evidence or examples needed to support your essays.

Once again, however, it is possible to get less than 10 points. This may happen if the essay answers include one major or numerous minor inaccuracies, especially when those were directly mentioned in the course materials.

Clarity of Writing and Style
For a 300-level college course, all college students of all majors should be able to write clearly and with a professional tone and style. In this section, I will evaluate your writing clarity and style.

15/15 indicates that your essays are impressive; they are clear, and professionally written.

10/15 indicates satisfactory, but not impressive writing in clarity, style, and tone.

8/15 indicates unsatisfactory writing in clarity, style, and tone.

Grammar, Mechanics, Word Choice, and Structure
I do not expect these essays to be as well written as an end of semester term paper, but I do expect them to be largely free of writing errors.

20/20 indicates that you may have some minor errors, but they do not distract from your argument or the evidence that you provide.

15/20 indicates that there are enough writing errors to somewhat distract the reader, but we can still tell what you are trying to argue.

10/20 suggests that the grammar and sentence structure contains enough errors that it is difficult to get through each paragraph without re-reading.

It is possible to get less than 10 points.
