For this test, you should work with the exercises in the section “Critical Thinking Activities: Recognizing deductive argument forms” on pp. 530-532 in your textbook.
Please ignore the two subsections called “Instructions” “Final Product” and the three called “Variation” in the preceding parts of this section on pp. 528-529; these are not relevant to the test.
Instead of the instructions on p.528-529, you should follow these modified instructions:
Each of the ten passages on pp. 530-532 in Exercises 1-10 uses up to two forms of deductive argument covered in Rules 22-26. For each of these Exercises 1-10, list all of the argument forms used in the argument.
If you find that only one argument form is used in the passage, then list just that one form. However, if you find that the same argument is used twice, then you should indicate this in your answer. For example, if you think that a passage uses modus ponens twice, you should write “modus ponens (2x)” .
In terms of formatting, you should model your answers to these Exercises after the bolder, non-italicized text portions of the Model Responses to Exercise Set 6.5 on pp. 415-418 of your textbook.
Lastly, I strongly encourage you to review the “Tips for Success” provided in Exercise Set 6.5 (on pp.161-162) before working on your answers, as these are also relevant to the Exercises on this test.
I also have added some supplementary materials that you can use to review for the test. These are:
1) A PPT on the logic of compound statements, an important topic for understanding deductive arguments.
2) A PPT on logical validity, which is the unifying concept behind deductive arguments
3) a PDF with ten further exercises for you to review. Note that the more complex philosophical arguments in numbers 6-10 are most similar to the questions on your test; while numbers 1-5 present simple arguments intended for more general review of Rules 22-26.
