Listening is the process of receiving, understanding, remembering, appraising, and responding to both nonverbal and verbal communication. Research suggests we only remember between 25-50% of the information we hear (MindTools, 2015.). We use active listening to consciously receive, understand, and respond to the information we are hearing. There are several culprits to poor listening:

Letting your mind wander (ex. becoming distracted, only pretending to pay attention)
Interrupting
Not making eye contact
Negative body language (ex. your posture and gestures indicating impatience)

An additional way to improve your active listening skills is by summarizing the conversation. A common phrase for summarizing is to say, “It sounds like you are saying ______. Is that right?” This allows you to give the person a chance to clarify if there are any errors in how they spoke and confirm that your interpretation is accurate (Grohol, 2018). Make sure you use this technique sparingly. If it is used too frequently in the same conversation, it can actually sound as though you are patronizing the other person. The benefits of improving your active listening skills are numerous. In your personal relationships, you will be able to respond with more empathy. Active listening also gives you a chance to ask questions, which allows the other person to feel heard and respected. If your loved one is distressed, active listening allows you to focus more on what they are saying, and need, versus your own needs.

From a professional standpoint, active listening gives you the chance to understand problems. Once you understand problems, you can begin to develop solutions (Cuncic, 2019). Active listening also shows you are proactive and willing to collaborate.
