General guidelines:

1. Your paper should be 8-10 pages in length including title page, abstract page, and references page. This means 5-7 pages written after the abstract page and before the references page. Papers that are not within the page limit will receive a grade reduction.
2. You should follow APA formatting guidelines.
3. Your paper is to be typed using 12-point Times New Roman font, 1-inch margins, and
double-spacing.
4. Your paper must be in Word format (either .doc or .docx). PDF, Pages, and all other
formats are unacceptable.

Specific guidelines:
1. Write an essay that offers an original communication theory (yes, YOU are the theorist here) to answer a research question.

2. Begin by selecting one of these research questions:
a) What makes interacting with “bad boys” so appealing?
b) Why do people “phub” (phone snub)?
c) What kinds of people are and are not persuaded by scientific information? What
explains persuasion to scientific information?
d) Or, create your own research question relevant to this course, but make sure
another theory does not already answer it. Helpful hint: Run your idea by me before you start writing to verify that you’re in the clear.

3. Steps:
• Brainstorm explanations to the question.
• Identify and define important concepts related to the question.
• Research the topic.
• Provide an answer to the question and explain it.
• Identify what type of communication theory this is (e.g., interpersonal, media, etc.). • Identify assumptions of your explanation.
• Sketch a model of your explanation.
• Then, revise and refine your explanation further.

4. Identify, read, and discuss 7 scholarly sources (peer-reviewed journal articles and/or books) that are relevant to your topic and incorporated through paraphrasing, not direct quotes. Use these articles to explain the importance of your topic, your sources of theoretical inspiration, your assumptions, and your key concepts in your explanation. Sources must be cited in-text AND on your references page.

5. Organize your paper into six sections:

Section 1 is the introduction. Include an attention-grabbing opening sentence, a thesis statement, and a preview of your paper. The introduction should provide your reader with a clear roadmap of what your paper will cover.

Section 2 should discuss the importance of the topic. Include a discussion on the research and theories that have inspired your thinking on the topic and provide an overview of your explanation.

Section 3 should discuss the assumptions of your theory. Because of the nature of assumptions, you may borrow assumptions from other theories if needed (in most cases, look no further than our textbook), but be sure to acknowledge which theorists/theories they come from. You may also create your own assumptions, but make sure there exists support for “assuming” (in most cases, citing a simple online or magazine survey could suffice for this assignment, but it does NOT count as one of your scholarly sources).

Section 4 should present the key concepts in your theory and how the concepts
relate to one another. You may borrow some key concepts from other communication theories if needed, but be sure to acknowledge which theorists/theories they come from. Furthermore, you must create an original configuration of key concepts. After all, a theory is not original if all of the key concepts are borrowed from another theory.

Section 5 should discuss limitations of your theory. Most academic journal articles contain limitations sections. It would behoove you to refer to those.

Section 6 is the conclusion. Review the main sections of your paper and provide an appropriate closing to your paper. Do not include any new information in this section.

6. To reach 7 scholarly sources, it helps to begin with University Libraries Library Search and/or Google Scholar. Additionally, sources beget sources. In other words, once you find your first relevant source, you will often find dozens of relevant references cited within that source. However, make sure you read and cite sources directly. Do NOT write, “as cited by…”

Evaluation: Your paper will be evaluated using these criteria:

1. Organization of the essay and thoughts within each part of the essay. /5
a. Does your introduction contain a compelling opening, thesis, and roadmap? b. Is the middle part of your essay organized into four distinct sections?
c. Does your conclusion summarize all main sections of your paper?

2. Research that supports your argument (importance, assumptions, key concepts). a. Does research come from academic, peer-reviewed sources?
b. Are a minimum of 7 scholarly sources cited in-text and on references page?
c. Is the relevance of sources to the topic made clear?
d. Is information from sources paraphrased rather than quoted?

3. Theory development and explanation. /30 a. Have you explained why the topic is important?
b. Have you explained where inspiration from your theory came from?
c. Have the assumptions of the theory been articulated?
d. Have key concepts in the theory been presented, defined, and explained? e. Have you explained how the concepts fit together?
f. Have you discussed potential limitations of your theory?

4. Proper use of APA style in-text and on the title page, abstract, and references page

5. Clear, grammatically correct writing, effective word choice, and careful proofreading.
