Course Paper Prompt:
During the semester, you will write a critical analysis of one specific artwork from a reputable
museum or gallery collection. If you are unsure what qualifies as reputable, please just ask.
Please choose your artwork early, so you may ask any questions and get clarifications well
before the due date. This analysis will contain information about formal, thematic, and historical
aspects of the artwork, which may be based on course lectures, discussions, readings, and
external research. You must cite at least TWO sources in your paper, and one of these may be
our textbook. I suggest using any of the following vetted museum websites to choose your
Metropolitan Museum of Art – NYC: www.metmuseum.org/
Museum of Modern Art – NYC: https://www.moma.org/
New Museum – NYC: https://www.newmuseum.org/
Centre Pompidou – Paris: https://www.centrepompidou.fr/en
Consider these questions when writing your paper:
What is the medium, form, subject matter, and context of the artwork?
What is the history of the artwork? Do you need to conduct more research?
What is your individual interpretation, reaction, and opinion of the artwork?
Do you know anything about the artist/designer of the artwork? Can you find out more?
What methods of art analysis can you use? Recall these methods from class and the text.
Does the artwork have a specific meaning? Consider social, cultural, and political trends.
Guidelines for the paper:
The paper must be 3 pages in length, double spaced, Times New Roman size 12 font.
You must choose an artwork that is NOT listed in the pages of our textbook. Please check
You must choose a CONTEMPORARY work of art! As a guideline, is must have been
created after 1980 CE. Exceptions can be made, but you will need to check with me first.
It is considered plagiarism if you copy any information directly from the art museum
website. Cutting and pasting information from the internet is also an example of
academic dishonesty, and is never allowed. When gathering outside information and
research to support your argument, you must cite every one of your sources.
For this course, you will submit through the [omitted]. This
will immediately run your submission through the entire internet database of academic
papers, and compare to all other submissions for this class as well. You will be able to
see and download the “originality report,” so you may verify the results. As a result of
this, copy-and-paste from an internet source will immediately be identified.
If you are caught plagiarizing, a failing grade will result. To avoid that, simply cite your
sources in a proper style (in parenthetical format or MLA format) in your paper. As an
example, for each citation note at least the following: (author, title, date, page number).
