Critique

Choose a website that primarily contains written content. You can select a site with any type of focus you feel is interesting—that is, it can be primarily for entertainment, information, instruction, etc. It would be best if it had a staff of consistent writers, or a single author (rather than taking material from other sites), but as long as the site has a unified tone/style/message/ethos, a lot of various things can work. Then:

1) Summarize/Overview the site, remembering to be objective and complete while explaining as much as you can determine about the site’s context—when was this created? For what purpose? what is/are the background/s of the author/s? Has the site evolved over time?

Then, select a representative essay (or several, if they are brief) from then site and summarize it to exemplify what you’ve said about the site. Try to make your summary 100 words or less. The idea here is to drastically compress the summary and incorporate it into the larger summary of the site.

2) Then, critique the rhetorical elements of the essay (audience, language, vocabulary, tone, allusions, logic, the sources quoted and used by the author, the quality/type of the author’s arguments, the way the author defines terms, any assumptions the author makes, etc). Use this critique to explore and explain how the author of the essay went about appealing to the audience you see as the primary audience for the site.

The point is not to enumerate each of the above items and “rate” their successfulness, but rather to explain in a unified way how they work together to achieve a certain effect. It may be the case that they don’t work together very well, but that, again, is a unified statement about the text as a whole.

–What is the writer trying to accomplish in the essay?

–Who is the author writing to, or assuming will read the essay?

–What techniques does the writer use to try to accomplish their goal?

–How do things like organization and tone help/hinder the goal?

–Is the writer effective? Why or why not?

–For this paper, use MLA citation again. Provide at least five cited examples that prove the points you make about rhetoric.
