This assignment is based on the Dante Alighieri poem, ‘Inferno.’ In particular, it is based on Cantos XXXIII and XXXIV. I will attach the full reading for both of these cantos as a PDF, please fully read the whole pdf; both cantos and comprehend them before choosing which question you feel you can write about best. *Take note where each cantos begins and ends in the PDF to avoid using evidence from both in the response that is only designed for ONE CHOSEN cantos*
You will have 2 question options to choose from. Option one will be based on only Cantos XXXIII and option two will be based on cantos XXXIV. PLEASE choose the option you can write the strongest on. Once chosen, you must respond fully in two developed paragraphs filled with quotes and analysis!!
Question options as follows;
Option 1) Canto XXXIII (9th Circle Compound Fraud/Treacherous to their Country/Treacherous to Guests and Hosts)
a. Count Ugolino is punished in this circle for treachery to his country, along with Archbishop Ruggieri. Briefly explain Ugolino’s specific sin and his eternal punishment. How does his contrapasso (punishment) metaphorically fit his sin? b. Note that Ugolino speaks to Dante directly: Does Ugolino seem to accept responsibility for his actions or is he placing blame? How is this shown specifically in the text? c. Go on to analyze Dante’s reaction/attitude towards Ugolino. Is he sympathetic, not sympathetic? d. Finally, why might Dante the Poet consider treason a worse sin than murder or rape?
Option 2) Canto XXXIV (9th Circle: lowest region, 9th circle of Hell: Compound Fraud/Treacherous to their Benefactors)
B. As Dante the Pilgrim enters Hell’s lowest region, he encounters sinners “covered wholly” by ice (line 14). Explain this contrapasso and how it metaphorically fits the severity of this sin. Why are these sinners punished by ice? Why might Dante have picked ice, not fire? b. Analyze Dante’s depiction and symbolism of Satan, the specific details of Satan’s position, appearance, his actions. Why might Dante depict Satan, the ultimate evil, as he does? c. Is Satan portrayed as overall powerful? How not powerful? d. Why might Dante the Poet position treachery against a benefactor as the worst fraud of all, in the very bottom of Hell?
Once you have chosen ONE option you can write best on, please answer all components of the question IN TWO DEVELOPED PARAGRAPHS. MAKE SURE to back up your statements with specific evidence (quotes) from the selected Canto and follow with a thorough analysis. PLEASE make the analysis very strong and that you use quotes to back up your words and that the quote is explained on what it shows!
REMEMBER, INFERNO IS AN EPIC POEM, WHICH MEANS IT SHOULD BE CITED LIKE THIS;
*MLA in-text citation epic poetry (Dante): Cite work, canto, and line number(s). Example: Francesca’s reference to Paolo as “this one” indicates her disdain for him (Inferno, V, 101).
I also attached the notes for both XXXIII AND XXXIV. Please read, as it is essential to read the quick notes along with the actual cantos reading. THANK YOU SO MUCH. I will thoroughly go over it when submitted, greatly appreciated.
