equality in education

Equity (or lack thereof) in education in the United States is institutionalized, where local wealth determines the resources that are provided to schools. After reviewing the both the summary of the School Funding Report, as well as viewing the Noguera video, discuss the following:

What are the larger implications of the structure of school funding and how this “system” impacts students?
What are your ideas of how we as a society can begin to address this issue (think of solutions, however big or small).

After reviewing both the summary of the School Funding Report, as well as viewing the Noguera video, the larger implications of the structure of school funding are that nearly half of the funding for public schools in the United States, however, is provided through local taxes, creating large differences between wealthy and poor communities. Funding levels show large inequalities, ranging from a high of $18, 719 per person in New York, to a low of $6,277 in Idaho. Money matters for student success. Increased spending on education leads to better student outcomes. When states invest in their public schools and create more equitable school finance systems, student achievement levels soar, and the positive effects are evening greater among low-income students. Students in high poverty communities continue to have less access to core academic services that increase student outcomes. The ten states with the lowest funding levels which hand over less than $8,000 per person are Florida, Mississippi, and Oklahoma and Arizona, Idaho, and North Carolina hand over less than $7,000 per person. Students in the south face a “double disadvantage” because provide low funding for communities with the most poverty. They need the most funding because they need the most resources to help the students succeed in the classroom. It costs more to educate low-income students and give them a potent education.

In the video, Pedro Noguera mentioned an incident where a person from Teach of America stepped into the position of being a teacher since the previous one quit. She was young and stressed out because she was kind of just thrown into the wolves and didn’t know how to control the class. To help her out, they told her to shadow a teacher veteran and she really learned way of how she should speak the children who are acting up. This veteran set a great example for this young teacher to follow in her footsteps. Us as a society could address the school funding issues by making a list beginning with neighborhood schools that are the most segregated and continuing into classrooms where too many students lack access to skilled teachers and rigorous coursework. Another idea we can address this issue is promoting the collection, monitoring, and evaluation of school spending data. School spending has been blurred because districts only had to report their data on the district level not on a school by school basis. That covered important spending imbalances within the district which often spend more money on affluent schools because that is where the more expensive, veteran teachers are.
second essay is to comment on it too
Great info Alexandra! I totally agree with your idea in promoting the collection of school spending data. I feel like a lot of average people don’t really understand how money can affect a child’s education. It is essential for people to realize that their tax dollars are going to schools to help shape students to become better adults in the future. If a child grows up in a low poverty school with not enough resources, I feel like they don’t have the ability to be the best student they can be. I remember my mom talking to me as a child on how important it is for everyone to vote in the school budget and that sometimes people who don’t have children do not vote yes because they don’t truly understand how their tax dollars are helping our children have a better education. Its possible that if a budget doesn’t pass then students wouldn’t be able to have certain after school activities or get new textbooks etc. I also agree with you that it is important for students to have access to skilled teachers and rigorous coursework. I think that this is something that also needs to be addressed by society.
