IT283-4: Examine TCP/IP Transport Layer Protocols.
GEL-8.03: Apply critical thinking to formulate a logical solution to a problem.
TCP/IP Transport Layer Protocols
The transport layer protocols of the OSI model dictate the type of connection you receive from the devices. This helps you in troubleshooting and understanding where to find problems in the network. Thoroughly understanding the two most common layer 4 protocols, TCP and UDP, is essential in understanding higher-level protocols, such as HTTP, HTTPS, FTP, among others, and being able to successfully troubleshoot problems and fix any networking issues that may arise.
Read the Assessment and respond to the checklist items based on the Reading and Learning Activities.
Write a 2-page paper on the following topics:
Explain, in detail, the header fields and functions of a UDP packet, as well as port numbers, processes, and how UDP behaves when used as a transport protocol by IPv6.
Explain, in detail, the header fields and functions of a TCP packet, as well as port numbers, processes, and how TCP behaves when used as a transport protocol by IPv6.
Select three network services (i.e., Telnet) and describe why UDP is used for transmission. Be sure the answer is thorough (e.g., port number, limitations, etc.).
Explain the TCP sliding window mechanism.
You are a consultant sent to a client who is experiencing network slowdowns. The client has 300 network devices spread over several departments. Provide three questions you would ask to define the problem. What are some TCP/IP tools you would use to analyze the problem? How does your knowledge of the OSI and TCP/IP models prepare you to resolve the problem?
