In 1619, the first enslaved Africans have carried to modern-day Virginia, inaugurating a violent system of labor extraction that would brutalize people of African descent for almost 250 years while transforming the colonies that would become the U.S. and then the nation itself into the richest in the world. To commemorate the 400-year anniversary of this original sin, the New York Times published a series of essays on the legacy of slavery written by some of the U.S.’s leading historians, called the “1619 project”.

For extra credit, please write a short response paper (2-3 pages) in which you connect one of reflecting on connections between one of the essays in this collection (NOT the Hannah-Jones essay that was assigned in class) and at least one of the readings from our course. How might the contemporary essay provide context or enrich our understanding of the 18th- and 19th-century texts we’ve read in class? And how, in turn, might the historical and literary texts that we’ve read contextualize or enrich these NYT essays? To receive credit for this assignment, you need to quote from and analyze both an essay from the 1619 Project and at least one text from our course.
