The final exam for HIST 1114-002 consists of the one (1) essay question found below. Students should formulate their response to this question as they would for any other academic essay. Exam essays should be approximately 1,000-1,250 words or 4-5 pages in length (12pt Times New Roman font) with 1 inch margins, double-spaced, and paginated. Grammar and spelling will be evaluated when determining the quality of this exam. A successful exam response should include a clear thesis statement presented within the essay’s introduction and draw its supporting evidence from course materials. While the exam essay does not have to provide references for lecture content, it should make explicit and direct reference to at least six (6) of the primary and/or secondary sources we’ve read as part of class discussions. Please use Chicago-style footnotes to make these latter references.
The essay question is as follows:
A major theme in this course has centred on how the inhabitants of Canada have struggled to define Canada as a nation, what it should represent, and for whom it ought to stand. Since Confederation in 1867, how have different groups in Canada sought to define and give meaning to the country known as Canada? How have these definitions conflicted with one another? How have they changed over time through to the present day? As part of your answer, be sure to mention at least four (4) different conceptions of Canada encountered throughout the course and be sure to discuss Indigenous peoples.
