Select an ASLA professional award-winning landscape architecture project from the past 5 years. Take time picking out your favorite project.
Carefully read the written description of the project. Make sure you understand all the text. Look up any words or references you do not know. Review all the photographs.
Find (2) additional sources about the project or the design firm. These can be digital, but you must cite them in your bibliography.
Once you have assembled all your information write a 3 page min. | 5 page max. paper that addresses the following questions.
Describe the project. Things to include are project title, project location, size, what does it look like, how does it function, who uses it, what are the main design features, what inspired the design.
Tell us about the designer (make sure at minimum you visit their website). What person or firm designed the project? Where are they located, what types of projects do they work on, what is their design style, inspiration, other projects of note etc.
4 topics – Next…pick 4 topics we have explored this semester and write about how something you learned in this class is illustrated, revealed, used, or leveraged in the design of your choosing.
For example, one week we spent time learning about topography. If topography plays a big role in the design through the use of man-made mounds or terraced seating, provide a detailed description of exactly how topography plays a role in the design expression. Try to include specific detail of how information you learned in class impacted your understanding of the project. Topics covered this semester include:
o Whatislandscapearchitecture–adefinitionandbasicexploration o Historyoflandscapearchitecture
o Thedesignprocessfromconcepttobuiltwork o Geniusloci
o Representingthelandscape–graphics o Introtocityandregionalplanning
o Siteengineeringandtopography o Plantingdesign
Personal Critique – Finally provide a personal critique of the project. Why did you select this project? Do you like it, why or why not? Do you look at it differently after this semester than, before taking this course? What did you learn if anything that impacted your understanding, appreciation, or dislike of the project?
