You’ve learned a lot about your topic, you’ve come up with something worthwhile to say, and in the previous few assignments, you’ve identified an alternate (non-scholarly) audience and explored the genres and/or modalities that might prove most effective for accomplishing your purpose with that audience. Your goal for this assignment will be to compose a design plan to guide you the rest of the way through the composing process.

First, take a look at a few examples. Here are some samples by students who adapted their research essays to letters or essays written for non-academic audiences, and below are some examples that experimented with different modalities:

Now that you’ve seen what the final product for this unit might look like, a design plan for your final product for this unit so that, in the coming assignments, you can refer back to the plan to guide you. Note: if at this point you decide to depart somewhat from the trajectory you’d established in the previous assignments, that’s okay.
What your design plan should look like depends much on the genre or modality you decide to compose in. If your final project will be primarily text-based—like an editorial, or a satirical essay—then your plan should explain the conventions or defining characteristics of that form of writing, how your product for this unit will adhere to those conventions, and what it will say. If you’ve chosen documentary film, your design plan should also start by explaining the conventions or defining characteristics, though then it should explain the various sections of the documentary, the content of the documentary, the style of cinematography, etc. And if you’ve chosen a website, then you should begin with the conventions for websites on that particular topic, followed by outlining the content, structure, and appearance of your website.
If you struggle with this stage of your project, that’s okay; speak to your instructor, but otherwise do your best, know that you will receive feedback, and remember, this is just a draft—you can always change, improve, or revise your plan as you go.
Ultimately, for the final product of this unit you will be graded on how well you adhere to and/or make use of the conventions and rhetorical advantages of your chosen genre/modality to accomplish the purpose you established in Assignment 23, so basically, this assignment is asking you to compose a plan for achieving the purpose you identified.
Requirements: Word doc, double spaced, 12pt font

Remember that the end goal for this unit is to build on the research project you did for the previous unit by reaching out to an audience affected by or implicated in your topic, and by persuading them to support your position on the topic through making composing decisions–including but not limited to genre and modality–that your selected audience will find engaging and persuasive.
Again, here is a more detailed breakdown of the requirements for final assignment for this unit:
* Maintain a clear purpose for composing that grows out of the writer’s prior inquiry, research, and argument
* Make strategic composing decisions in response to the writer’s rhetorical situation, including choices of genre and/or modality, and choices that make use of that genre or modality’s particular conventions, characteristics, or capabilities
* Make informed composing decisions in response to feedback from peers, tutors, and the instructor
* Provide relevant background information and definitions of key terms
* Integrate sources in service of producing knowledge, insight, or perspective that the writer’s chosen audience will find persuasive, useful, and/or engaging
* Meet audience expectations for clarity, cohesion, organization, syntax, and mechanics
* Adhere to MLA conventions for formatting a bibliography or works cited page, and where appropriate, adhere to the conventions of Creative Commons licensing, including the ethical use and citation of others’ texts and work
