Stress is a response to demands and conflicts internally and environmentally (Sharma, 2016). “Stress can cause decreased life satisfaction, the development of mental disorders, the occurrence of stress-related illnesses (cardiovascular disease, gastrointestinal disorders, low back pain, headaches), and decreased immunologic functioning result from stress (Murdaugh, et. al, 2018).” Some people deal with more stress in their life than others and some people handle stress better than others. Learning to manage stress and enhance coping strategies can greatly benefit quality of life. Three ways to educate clients on managing and coping with stress are goal setting, exercise, and relaxation, which are types of problem-focused coping and emotion-focused coping (Sharma, 2016).
The population that was chosen is worksite stress management program. Work can be very stressful for some people and can ultimately affect your whole life. The theory of stress and coping addresses the stressors associated with work by doing a primary appraisal, during this part of the theory the person will determine what is causing the stress and decide if this is going to be trouble. Primary appraisal is followed by a secondary appraisal to determine the amount of control they have over their stressors. With stress from work a person can brainstorm in order to appraise their situation. After the appraisals is coping, this is problem-focused and emotion-focused coping. Problem focused is about changing the environment or situation, and emotion-focused is about changing the way you feel about a situation or event. Problem-focused coping strategies such as problem-solving skills can be very beneficial in a work environment. After applying coping skills, reappraise the situation to decide if it was effective (Sharma, 2016).

We have all encountered stress in our lives one way or another, but how we cope with stress makes a vast difference. Living with diabetes mellitus can be stressful to the individual. The stress of making healthy food choices, maintaining your physical health, taking medication, and doctor visits. Living with diabetes can lead to depression which can increase your glucose levels. Therefore, educating your patient is important in order to find ways to live with the disease. “People with diabetes have to self-manage their lifestyle behaviors monitor their blood glucose and take medication as prescribed in order to control their condition effectively. Being stressed, anxious or depressed can have an effect on how well they can achieve this” (Hardly, 2015, p.450).
Using the Hardiness Theory, I was able to come up with three ways to educate clients to mange stress and enhance coping. The first one is positive affirmation, speaking positively each day helps to overcome self-defying behaviors to improve your health adherence in managing diabetes. Believing that you are not going to let diabetes defeat you. Another way is to educate patients how to get involved in their personal care by making healthy food choices, exercising to lose weight and alleviate stress. The third way is to challenge yourself by setting goals to lose weight gradually each month, motivate yourself, and maintain the weight loss. “A final construct that has been linked to resistance to stress is optimism which is the tendency to expect the best possible outcome or to think about the most hopeful aspects of any situation” (Sharma, 2017, p. 127).
