Read and annotate Bobby McMahon’s “In Defense of Superheroes as Role Models” (handout). Complete the pre-writing exercise attached to this module. This needs to be handed in with your draft
Think back to your childhood heroes or, if you are a parent, consider your child’s role models. What movie characters or book heroines appealed to you or your children? How did these characters shape a sense of right and wrong? Did they, as McMahon’s article argues, teach you the importance of “duty and sacrifice”? If not, what did they teach you? Using the pre-writing exercise as a starting point, write an essay in which you compare/contrast your experience with role models to McMahon’s.
Checklist: Your essay should include:
An introduction in which you introduce and briefly summarize McMahon’s essay and offer a quick overview of your own experience.
A thesis statement at the end of your introduction which indicates how your experience was similar and/or different from McMahon’s (ex. Both Cofer and I know the humiliation that stereotyping engenders, but my experience better captures the lasting effects of discrimination.)
2-3 body paragraphs which utilize effective topic sentences that directly compare/contrast your experience to McMahon’s (ex. Both McMachon and I….ex. While McMahon….., I …….) More than likely, you will have one body paragraph in which you show how you and McMahon are similar and another in which you show how your.
experiences are different. A third body paragraph, explaining what your experience reveals that McMahon’s does not, might also be necessary. Either way, your body paragraphs should:
Reference McMahon’s essay directly (i.e. use quotations from McMahon’s essay)
Use specific examples and details from your experience
Stay on topic (i.e. discuss only one point of comparison/contrast per paragraph)
A conclusion in which you wrap-up the essay and reiterate to your reader how your essay adds to the conversation surrounding role models.
