Paper Two: Value Arguments (A Critical Paper) evaluating Issue Fundamentals with a recognition and understanding of opposing perspectives and alternative value systems. One week plus to complete. Rough Draft: 2-3 pages, 3-4 sources. Read slow, write fast.

Paper Two is a traditional argumentative essay. It is important that you review the rubric in the content section of D2L as this paper will be graded based on that rubric. All sources should be of an academic nature: primary and peer reviewed. After you have identified and read/tagged your sources, place them in the same PDD you used for Paper One.

As you may know, all argumentative essays MUST have a clearly stated thesis.

Unlike Paper One, which was written without a value bias (For example, cancer is not good or bad, it just is….). Paper TWO makes a claim: ” Cancer is a primary cause of death in the USA and it must be eradicated.” You know you have a thesis when someone can disagree with it, even if it sounds a bit harsh: Counter argument: “Cancer should not be eradicated, it is nature’s way of ensuring biological balance among animal species”

…or something like that.

Your thesis will bring focus to your article/source search. Whereas Paper One might contain information about how cancer-free lungs work, Paper Two will seek very specific articles that support your argument.

Example: Cancer must be eradicated because:

Buckets: … (not buckles… 🙂 …

1. healthcare costs

2. economic impact

3. personal loss

4. Secondary research benefits, etc

If Paper Two sounds like Paper One, directions have not been followed. Review the discussion of Papers One, Two, and Three in the previous News entry.

As you are working on Paper Two, I will be commenting on your Paper One. My comments on Paper One will be used to create a Second Draft of Paper One. AND my Paper One comments MUST be transferred to Paper Two. So, if Paper One “Akers comments” include a “need to review comma usage,” Paper Two must be free of comma errors. If Paper One Akers comments states that there was a failure to include a long, block quote. A long block quote must be inserted in Draft 2 of Paper One and Paper Two must include a long, block quote, or it will be marked down significantly.

In short, to get an A on your papers is pretty straight forward: follow directions, follow the rubric, and make the suggested changes in response to “Akers Comments” on your drafts.

Important: Do not reuse sources from Paper One in Paper Two.

Finally, this paper will require a formal introduction to the thesis that pulls the reader into the topic and motivates them to continue reading. Don’t begin your paper with a question opener or a term definition. Introductions are sometimes best left after the body of the paper is complete and you’ve gained more knowledge about your topic.
