Interview a Counselor

I have to interview a Substance abuse counselor and ask these questions. The answers are here too. Assignment 2 – Counselor Interview Paper: Each student will be required to interview one (1) professional counselor (LPC, LCDC, LMFT, LCSW) who works in a substance abuse treatment setting and submit a one/two-page, type-written response. (APA format) (15 points total)

The following questions should be asked:

a. How do you define substance-related problems? This question could be construed two different ways for me. First, there are various substance-related problems that we work with clients on in our Corrections Facility. Problems associated with education (lack of basic education due to substance use), employment (lack of job skills related to substance use), family/social environment (problems with codependency and abuse related to substance use), and often legal (problems associated with criminal thinking and activity related to substance use). Secondly, there are other substance-related problems including withdrawal and substance-induced mood disorders.

b. Who provides services to the clients? In our environment, we have Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselors and Counselor Interns who work together to provide services that include group therapy and individual therapy.

c. What treatment modalities are used? In our environment, we tend to focus on CBT, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. We have found this modality works well with this population. Certainly, Client-Centered (Person-Centered) Therapy is important to establish rapport. Additionally, we find Reality Therapy to be useful with this population.

d. What are the goals of treatment? We focus on making an impact on one person at a time. When we are able to help one person improve their life, the ripple effect is endless. Helping not only that individual but also their family and friends, perhaps for generations. Within corrections treatment, we also have a goal to reduce recidivism in our communities.

e. What does the discharge process entail? In our facility, the discharge process begins approximately two months prior to discharge. The client is expected to develop a Relapse Prevention Plan and be able to intelligently discuss various aspects of recovery-based living. The treatment staff then complete a discharge summary document.

f. What are the credentials of the staff? We have LCDCs on staff, Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselors, and Counselor Interns. On our other corrections units, we employ LPCs, Licensed Professional Counselors for special-needs clients.

g. What ethical issue has been a challenge for you? In our environment, the ethics of confidentiality tend to be a challenge. We work in small offices with multiple professionals and clients in the same room. This is just an issue with logistics within a correctional environment. We work hard to maintain professionalism and strong boundaries in order to work through this challenge.

h. What is your greatest challenge when working with substance abuse clients? Often, for me, the greatest challenge is trust. The social environments that many of our substance abuse clients come from tend to be distrustful of authority and others. This challenges me and my paraprofessionals to work to establish a healthy rapport that supports a trusting relationship.
