If you haven’t done so in response to the Module 8 Discussion Board video, please go to the link to the Black Mirror “Nosedive” synopsis available online at:

Spoiler alert: if you don’t want to know how the episode ends, don’t watch the entire video above — just the first 2 to 5 minutes max! Feel free to also go online and type in “Black Mirror Nosedive,” to watch any number of short videos capturing a portion of the episode and/or explaining it. It will give you a better feel of the issues discussed in our Main Lecture involving a “scored” society. (There are also dozens of articles about the episode online, if you wish to dive deeper.). Of course, if you are able to do so, I encourage you to watch the episode on Netflix — but watching is not required either for the class or for participating in this week’s Discussion board.

As discussed in this week’s Lecture Video, the “Nosedive” episode raises profound issues involving our relationship with technology. When the episode first aired in 2016, few people in the U.S. were aware that China was on its way to developing a robust “social credit” system that in many ways resembles what is being depicted in the episode. That system of credit depends to some degree on government surveillance of social media postings, as well as compiling tracking data on everyone across a range of their activities.

The questions for you to think about while participating in this week’s discussion board are the following:

In what ways do people in the U.S. voluntarily consent to being scored or rated or measured by some company, organization, service offering, or by other individuals?
To what extent do you believe that some component of the government is collecting the scoring or ratings that you have identified above, either directly or indirectly?
Can you find any evidence online that corporations or institutions are “reselling” any of this type of data to one or more governmental agencies?
