you will consider one of the socio-musical groups Hesmondhalgh addresses (subcultures, scenes, neo-tribes, and articulated genres) and apply those ideas to one of the musical examples given in modules 7-10 (Dirty South Hip Hop, LA Heavy Metal, Riot Grrrls, Technobanda/Polka Masses). A strong essay will be able to identify the characteristics/claims associated with that socio-musical grouping and tie it to specific examples from the musical example. You may also find it useful to address Hesmondhalgh’s criticism of that socio-musical grouping if applicable.
Remember to focus on the ideas/claims Hesmondhalgh and the scholars he is debating: you will find these claims in the scholarly articles provided in the modules and in lecture materials (though most of the lecture content is distilled from the scholarly articles). Your musical examples can rely on any of the videos, songs, and other essays I have provided in the lectures. DO NOT draw from musical examples outside of what has been provided in class.
Your essay should be 3 pages long. It should also include a proper bibliography in MLA format, and include in text citations for any quoted or paraphrased material. Due to the short length of the paper, keep your quotations short in length; excessive use of quotations may result in a lower grade.
I decided to draft about how LA Heavy metal as a “subcultre” in the 1970s-80s. I have provided all the documents that the instructor provided on the subculture during that time. Please include other sources about the LA heavy metal scene you find.
