Julia Suárez-Krabbe draws us to a decolonizing the social sciences based on postcolonial critiques of knowledge, race, power, exploitations of land and people, or what liberation entails. The dualities between colonizer/colonized and traditional/modern are shown as ever more complex. On a personal note, I enjoy how Suárez-Krabbe delves into her own heritage and mestizo identity. To me, this illustrates how we are all shaped by coloniality in some form or another. But what is coloniality to you and how do you understand it? How do you think we’ve been shaped by it – as individuals, locally, nationally, and/or globally?

Julia Suárez-Krabbe explores history of colonization in the Sierra Nevadas of Colombia and the resistance of the Mamos throughout history. She postulates that Human Rights and development cannot be understood separately as they are connected by the idea of race. So, while Human Rights and development are tools to achieve protections, access in the dominant society, or attain specific political goals, or they limit social change. Why? They framed within a specific dominant ontology and maintain global hierarchies of knowledge and power. In this way, she argues that Human Rights and development are tools of race that have been forged to legitimize and maintain coloniality and what she calls “the death project.” What is the death project? And what are her proposals about diversity (pluriversality) as it pertains to the “Othered” histories, knowledges, and cultures of Indigenous peoples?
