New Worlds For All Paper

“In 1492, there were no Indians in America, only Native people. By 1800, the descendants of those original inhabitants were called Indians. There were far fewer of them and most lived in ways undreamed of by their ancestors and on a fraction of their ancient homelands. The people responsible for the decline had taken and applied Indian ways as they took over Indians’ lands. Despite their determination to remain who they were, they had also changed.” When these people arrived in America they tried hard to “remain English, French, and Spanish,” but eventually, through the encounters with the “American environment and its indigenous inhabitants, became something different” (from New Worlds for All). They became Americans, who often willfully forgot the native cultures that influenced them from the very beginning.

Write an essay in which you describe ways in which these groups of people interacted and influenced each other. Make sure you include examples from the French, British, and Spanish settlements. And make sure you cover health care and disease, food, religion, war and diplomacy, and both “Indian” and European societies in America. In the end, what can we say about the society that resulted and who created it?

You need specific examples and quotes from New Worlds to back up your assertions (HINT: When I say specific examples I mean quotes and examples from the actual experiences of Native Americans and Europeans at the time, not just the author’s conclusions. EVERY assertion you make it needs to be backed up with historical evidence). You may also use examples from the textbook and the lectures to back up your assertions, but the MAIN source has to be New Worlds for All.

If you only include the conclusions of the authors, and do not include quotes from the people who were there at the time the best you can do is a low C.
