Your final major paper may focus on either the Form of Cinema (how it is made) or the Content of Cinema (what the various film elements employed represent) or a mix of these interpretations. Regardless of the path you choose, you must make an argumentative claim in your paper, focused around and attempting to prove the validity of a debatable thesis statement.
Possible topics for your chosen film:
Explore how a character changes throughout the film. Have they grown? If so, how does the film show this change?
Does your film use metaphor to explain a societal or cultural problem?
On the technical side of your film, how are cinematic elements used to explain the overall theme or thesis of the film?
How does your chosen film fit into a particular genre?
Using cinematography and/or mis-en-scene, show what a film is attempting to portray.
How does persona differ from an actual actor? Does your chosen film play off of audience expectations?
Taking the concepts of film editing, show how particular methods of editing creates a desired effect.
What is the overall effect of diegetic and nondiegetic sound in the film? How do these sounds work to create an overall impression or thesis?
Use any of the following literary theories to explore where and how a film fits into a larger context:
Race and Culture
Show how a setting can be a character. Is setting important to an overall film experience?
Take a film that is considered, by film critics and film scholars, to be a classic and show how it is actually flawed.
Take a film that is considered, by film critics and film scholars, to be an inferior film and show how it should be reevaluated
Revisit your favorite film and see if your interpretation has changed.
