Paper One: A Close Reading of a Short Story or Poem

In addition to quoting and citing your short story/poem(s), you need to reference LEAST TWO articles/entries from the DCCC library databased. Depending on your thesis, you may want to cite facts from the author’s biography, discuss the literary movement he/she was a part of, What will I be writing about? Select one of the short stories or poems listed below. You will design an original thesis about what the author is trying to accomplish and/or communicate through this piece of literature. You are welcome to consider the author’s biography, interviews with the author, and/or relevant literary criticism in defense of your thesis. •Chopin’s “Story of an Hour”•Diaz’s “A Cheater’s Guide to Love”•Adichie’s “Checking Out”•Langston Hughes’ “Let America be America Again” I’m looking for clear, well-structured, effective writing that reflects your critical thinking about the poem/story. I want to see that you researched, read, understood, and integrated relevant articles pertaining to the literature you are examining.
