Part I: Takeaway Reflection

Part I: Takeaway Reflection
Takeaways are a special way to memorialize in writing particular aspects of what you have learned from your work in the class. Writing the Takeaways is meant to elicit a deeper reflection on your “personal” reaction to the “stimulus” you have been exposed to. Research has shown that reflection is a powerful learning mechanism. Takeaways are written in first person singular.
1. How do you see yourself in relation to the organization/community you are working with?
How might they view you? Who controls decision-making? How can you improve this relationship so your project is more empowering for all? (100-200 words)
2. Why might it be important to address the root causes of a problem? What might be reasons not to do so? To what extent have you defined your own design challenge in a way that addresses root causes, and why? (100-200 words)
3. To what extent do you believe the goals of Design for [X]—desirability, usability, feasibility, and sustainability—are the ones we should be striving towards in humanitarian design and community development projects? What additional or alternative goals might be important to consider? (100-200 words)

Part II: Reading/Video Analysis
Unless otherwise stated, links to readings and videos are provided in the syllabus.
1. Watch “The myth of scale” by Toyama and “Reinventing the Rickshaw to Drive Social Impact” by Ashoka. How do they relate to the “orders of social change” discussed in the Sustainable Community Development lecture? (100-200 words)
2. Watch “Perspective is everything” by Sutherland. What is the main message? What examples are provided? (100-200 words)
3. Watch “The Power of Prototyping” by Klemmer and read pp. 34-39 in bootcamp bootleg
and pp. 111-121 in The Field Guide to HCD. What are the key points? (100-200 words)
