Response on Peer 1

For me, I think the sense of sight is very important to poems. The author wrote down what they saw and added some wonderful adjectives to make poems, and when readers see these poems, they will imagine the scene the author saw at the time and are more likely to associate with what they have experienced. The author writes poems and added sensual imagery to allow readers to go deeper into the poems and appreciate the emotion. The connection between the two is that after seeing the description of people and objects, you can further experience feelings and emotions.
I would like to compare “Just the way you are” sung by Bruno Mars with the Egyptian love poems. The poem that says “she is one girl, there is no one like her. She is more beautiful than any other…” from the website of Egyptian Love Poems from the old and the Middle Kingdom. In the poems, the author uses words to describe the girl’s beauty is somewhat similar to the song of Bruno Mars, Both of which are talking about how beautiful a girl is. Like the poem says “her hair of genuinelapis lazuli; her arm more brilliant than gold; her fingers like lotus flowers, with heavy buttocks and girt waist.” and the song says “Oh, her eyes, her eyes. Make the stars look like they’re not shiny”, these are all describing the beautiful features of the girl. They also used exaggeration to highlight the beauty of the girl and described the girl they saw as incredible and unique.

Response Peer 2:

1. In my opinion, sight makes the poem seem real. Being able to describe imagery makes the reader feel as though they’re living through it or it will remind them of a time that felt similar. I think the ancient authors used this technique to make people relate to their writing or they do it to make their writing desirable to readers. Sensual imagery especially helps when it comes to love poems because it makes you want to experience that type of love or it reminds you of a past type of love that you’ve experienced.
2. The poem “The New Kingdom” reminded me of a love song by Tim Mcgraw called “Don’t Take the Girl.” The beginning of the poem starts with “She is one girl, there is no one like her. She is more beautiful than any other.” In the song he talks about how much he loves his wife that hes willing to give her life for her because she is the only one for him. Tim Mcgraw said, “Take the heart from my chest. I’ll gladly take her place if you let me.” The words themselves are very different but it still states how their love is so strong for each other.

Response Peer 3

The sense of sight enhances poems by invoking visual imagery to cause you to relate to something familiar. When people can relate to something familiar, they are more interested. When color or shapes are described vividly, you can visualize how it looks. A few phrases in Sappho’s work that instantly gave me a visual in my mind are; “sparrows, whirling their wings into a blur”, “a cold sweat covers me”, and “wreath of roses and garlands of flowers”.
There is so much more to look at now-a-days, I think that ancient authors used this technique to attract more listeners because they were intrigued by what they were hearing and could create the visual story in their minds.
Sensual imagery is taste, touch, smell, sight and sound. Love poems use sensual imagery to combine the mind and body.
