• is personally meaningful to you;

• will help them better engage in their community;

• will help them make a positive difference; and/or

• will help them develop a clearer understanding of the diverse cultures that comprise their community.

¨ Your speech is to be based on sound reasoning and evidence and must include motivational appeals; to be effective in your attempts to persuade, you must establish yourself as a credible speaker.

¨ Keep in mind that effective use of visual aids will strengthen your persuasive speech.

¨ Length should be approximately 6 minutes.

¨ Question of Policy Thesis Statement should include:

• An action, outcome, or a solution

¨ Organizational Pattern should be well organized, using MONROE’S MOTIVATED SEQUENCE:

I. Attention should be presented as fully developed main point sentences, including:
• Attention getter to capture your audience’s interest.

• Clear statement of purpose/Reason to listen.

• Strong establishment of credibility.

• Well developed Question of Policy thesis statement and preview of reasons (main

points).

II. Need should be presented as fully developed main point sentences, including:
• Problem demonstrated

• Ramifications given

• Use of sufficient support

• Pointing to specific audience needs

• Strong support/oral citations

• Transition sentence to next main point: Satisfaction

III. Satisfaction should be presented as fully developed main point sentences, including:
• Solution described and explained

• Need and solution logically connected with strong reasoning

• Solutions are practical

• Aware of limitations

• Strong support/oral citations

• Transition sentence to next main point: Visualization

IV. Visualization should be presented as fully developed main point sentences, including:
• Hypothetical positive results

• Hypothetical negative results (if not implemented)

• Strong support/oral citations

• Transition sentence to Action

V. Action should be presented as fully developed main point sentences, including:
• Restatement of Question of Policy thesis statement and review of reasons (main points).

• Concluding purpose

• Call to action

• Clincher

¨ Transitions should be presented as a complete sentences explaining the relationship between one sequence (main point) to the next.

¨ Use at least four different types of supporting materials, (i.e., examples, testimony, facts & statistics, narratives, definition).

¨ Cite at least five different sources orally in your speech. ALL QUOTES, STATISTICS, FACTS, AND PARAPHRASES MUST BE ORALLY CITED IN YOUR SPEECH.

¨ Reasoning: Use at least one instance of valid reasoning (i.e., causal, inductive, deductive, analogical).

¨ Clear explanations should be presented, using organizers (first, second, third); emphasis cues (This is the

most important part…); definitions, and examples.

¨ Visual aid is required. No more than 5 words per slide.

¨ 5 Note cards can be used. Handwritten only, front and back. CANNOT BE TYPED.

¨ Question and answer segment will follow each speech.

¨ Delivery skills should include:

• Eye contact and engagement with the audience.

• Upright posture, effective use of space, and appropriate gestures.

• Articulately spoken.

• Extemporaneously presented with note cards.
