Assignment: Artifact Presentation (100 points)
Description:
For this project, the term artifact refers to anything that illustrates and exemplifies concepts from our course that you encounter outside of class. Possible artifacts include, but are not limited to, movies, TV shows, news stories/articles, magazine articles, songs, advertisements, social media postings, play/book excerpts, poems, cartoons, or anything else that might illustrate the concept of your choice. In this assignment, you are asked to select one artifact and, in an oral and written report, provide: 1) a description of the relevant course concept, 2) a description of the artifact, and 3) an explanation and analysis of how the artifact illustrates the course concept(s).
Presentation: You will deliver this information to the class in an engaging, informative presentation (about 5-7 minutes) using PowerPoint (or Prezi, etc.). Please select an artifact that relates to a course concept that will have already been covered by the time you present. You might consider using the following structure for your presentation:
I. Introduction:
A. Introduce yourself to the class
Example: “Hi, My name is Colin Steele. Today I will share with you my PCA Presentation on Emotions as they relate to the Pixar film, “Inside Out” released in 2015.
B. Preview main points
Example: “To start this presentation, I will first define emotions and explain their influence on our perceptions. Secondly, I will briefly explain the main theme and character in the film “Inside Out.” Lastly, I will discuss the analysis.”
II. Body:
A. Explain the concept using the textbook as a reference.
B. Explain the artifact briefly.
C. Explain how the artifact illustrates the concept.
D. Briefly show the audience the artifact (Keep this short. Please do not use video clips that are longer than 2 minutes).
III. Conclusion:
A. Summarize main points
B. End with saying something like “Thank you for listening” (do not end your presentation by saying, “That’s it”).
Grading Criteria:
Grading will be based on the adherence and completion of the requirements of this assignment, including the structure of your group’s written portion, delivery of the presentation, and physical representations of the artifact and interpersonal communication concept(s).
