You have to reply this two posts. The other two posts have to be responses to fellow group members (3-5 substantive sentences)In this module, you are learning about various threats to international security and in this week’s discussion, I want you to focus on the proliferation of conventional weapons (see courseware unit) and connect it to the challenges faced by UN peacekeepers (see your “attendance videos”). During this discussion week, you will first have to read this comic strip about arms smuggling. Then, in your original contribution, you should reflect on the connections between illegal weapons proliferation and the work of the United Nations in post-conflict reconstruction. Questions to consider are: What are the challenges faced by UN peacekeeping? How does this complicate their DDR missions?
1. The UN peacekeeping is a department that is part of the United Nation designed to help countries navigate the path of conflict to peace within their country. The organization has may rules that they follow in order to help restore peace, such as:” Consent of the parties. Impartiality. Non-use of force except in self-defense and defense of the mandate (Peacekeeping, 1)”. They are non violent with hopes to keep the peace, but they do endure many difficulties. UN peacekeeping faces increasingly difficult challenges, including attacks against peacekeepers, complex mandates, and uneven political support. Because of al the challenges it complicates their DDR missions. DDR stands for Disarmament, Demobilization, and Reintegration. The reason and process of DDR missions are to remove weapons from the hands of members of armed groups, taking the fighters out of their groups and helping them to reintegrate as civilians into society, so that they can become active participants in the peace process. When the UN peacekeepers do not have political backing or protection from their government it makes it very difficult to execute their plans successfully. UN peacekeepers so have way more recognition and support because they are doing a very dangerous job in order to keep the entire world from being at war.
2.The comic strip illustrated a story of the main character’s process to smuggle arms across state borders into Somalia, which reflects a variety of concepts that undermine international security. The comic strip story is an example of horizontal proliferation of conventional weapons illegally, which was executed during a period where UN peacekeeping was present to aid. As mentioned, there was a UN arms embargo, which Samoletov(Arms dealer) knew of, but he did not plan to adhere to it; situations as such causes problems for UN peacekeeping because there is already large set of objectives that they must heed to. For example, they must protect citizens and secure mandates that are set. Having illegal proliferation of conventional weapons will create a climate of instability and arm those who do not have the country’s security in their best interest. Going against UN regulations complicate the UN peacekeeping’s mission to disarm, demobilize, and and reintegrate a society because it does not support the ideal environment where those things can be done.
In your responses to two others students, you should focus on what this says about challenges to international security in general and consider possible ways that these challenges could be overcome.
