You are required to write two reading journals on TWO articles:
You must do the response paper to these articles:
• Murray, David. 2000. Colonial Justice: Justice, Morality, and Crime in the Niagara District, 1791-1849. Chapter 10: “Hands Across the Border”, Toronto: University of Toronto Press
· Strange, Carolyn and Tina Loo. 1996. “Spectacular Justice: The Circus on Trial and the Trial as Circus, Picton, 1903”. Canadian Historical Review 77(2): 159-184.
Each reading journal entry is to have two components: a summary of the article and its main argument(s) and a critical analysis of the article.
Your responses must be 2-3 pages per article (so you are writing 6 pages max). Please have one-inch margins; double space, and use 12-point times new roman font.
Because the reading journals are not that long, the summary component must be succinct and no more than 150 words.
You will be tasked with providing a critique of the article and situating the work within the broader field. Some of the questions you could be thinking about:
Ø Are there are gaps or issues with what the author(s) suggest(s)?
Ø Can you apply his/her argument to a novel situation or another case study to enrich the original argument?
Ø Do you buy what the author is suggesting? Why/why not?
Ø How is his/her argument germane to the course or the study of sociology of law?
Ø What theoretical school(s) is the author coming from?
Ø How does the author’s methodology help frame his/her argument?
When you re-read your paper (which you should be doing to see if it flow well), ask yourself the following questions:
Did you explain everything to the reader clearly?
Why should the reader care about what you are talking about? Or, why should the reader buy what you are selling?
How is what you have written something different from what the author said?
