During our first class session this semester, one student proposed that we return to Shakespeare’s writing because his works resonate with many people. Shakespeare’s plot and his characters are often what we remember; however, these elements would not resonate without Shakespeare’s use of language. Shakespeare’s characters are in a fundamental sense writing which “comes to life” when readers use their imaginations and actors use their embodied experience to breathe life into Shakespeare’s letters and words and phrases.
In “Of Discourse” Francis Bacon reflects upon the different ways in which the way people speak determines their character. In “How the Soul Discharges Its Passions” Michel de Montaigne asks, “What causes do we not invent for the misfortunes that befall us?” (14). While fairly summarizing and contrasting Montaigne’s and Bacon’s ideas about the way speech and character interact, compare and contrast at least two different characters from Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” by carefully analyzing at least one speech by each character, selected from acts 3, 4, or 5. Avoid plot summary and superficial comments as much as possible. I may be providing supplementary materials to assist with this question as well. (In uploaded file)
