Should the Internet Be Censored?
Internet censorship is a tool used by the government to control the types or types of content accessed or viewed via the Internet through regulatory agencies (Kant et al.) Censorship is done by using web filters that use blacklists and keyword blocking to deny access to undesirable pages or websites. This fact generates the idea or question of whether the Internet should be censored. There are both positive and negative effects of censorship that will lead us to develop the answer.
Internet censorship is beneficial in many ways. Censorship is used to protect children from accessing explicit, dangerous, or negative content that is non-beneficial to their lives. It is mostly used as a limit so that regulators can control the content exposed to various persons in different locations. Censorship creates a common-sense limit that is important and sustains moral safety as it allows constructive content. It promotes healthy internet use as the content posted there is ethical and decent, avoiding moral decay and excessive internet use. Censorship also averts the spread of fake news. Through the controls and regulations set, the information released to the public domain is closely monitored before being posted; hence, false news can easily be detected, thus cutting down on the spread of lies. Censorship also leads to less identity theft and access to copyright information (Rimmer, Matthew) The protocols and guidelines placed do not allow people to access personal information and content with exclusive rights. It is also used as a measure to curb down cyber and Internet crime-related activities. Setting the regulations makes it easy to avoid sites related to crimes such as human trafficking and drug syndicates. Censorship is also used to monitor many people and the activities they are undertaking from across the globe.
Internet censorship is a great type of control and has its demerits that need to be scrutinized.
Internet censorship can also be harmful in some ways. Internet censoring is a great limit to the freedom of speech. This fact is due to the limits and boundaries set on uploads, which may restrict you to what the regulator allows dimming your potential. It can lead to the restriction of too much information. This happens when most information is blocked due to the possibility of content being fake, and thus it leads us to think carefully about what should be blocked and what not to. Biasness of regulators can lead to withholding of information as it depends on who decides what to post; thus, clear rules should be defined to consider what to be uploaded. The charges incurred during the survey of what users are doing on the Internet and the cost needed to employ a workforce that will control internet usage and limits is an additional cost that will burden the taxpayers. Censorship has been used by other governments, mostly to silence people for fear of radicalization.
Internet censorship is a very sensitive topic that should be investigated very carefully. Therefore, the government adopts a classic approach. It must highlight the facts and look at both sides of the arguments before deciding as these deals with different political (Meserve et al.) social, cultural, and environmental factors. The decision also involves societal norms and laws. The administration should be careful not to oppress one side while trying to please the other side. Internet is a tool that nowadays has become our voice as it is available at your fingertips and owing to the ease of success the censorship should be greatly discussed to ensure that it doesn’t lock out other people’s voices.
