Peter Berger and Thomas Luckmann are famous in the field of sociology for writing The Social Construction of Reality. This theory states we function as individuals based on the experiences we have with others around us. Our reactions impact the reality we perceive and establish a social structure that others respond too.
In conjunction, Sociologist Erving Goffman developed the concept of dramaturgy; the idea that life is like a never-ending play in which people are actors. Through role-play in our daily lives we create reality.
Both of these ideas are considered Symbolic Interaction theories. Meaning, there is symbolism and meaning through our interactions.
Our textbook in Chapter 4, the outline, flashcards, PowerPoint, and introduction to Module 3 discuss the implications of these theories in our lives.
In this assignment think of an individual you are familiar with. The person cannot be yourself and you may not use the person’s real name.
What is the person’s ascribed status, achieved status, and master status? (Notice, I will be looking to make sure you understand the definitions of each.)
According to Goffman, what role is the person attempting to “play” in a Dramaturgical Analysis? What reality has the person perceived to be a part of?
According to Symbolic Interaction, what groups, organizations, hobbies, and daily activities guides the persons understanding of the real world?
This analysis should easily make-up one full single-spaced page. You are encouraged to write more. Do not include a header in your submission.
