1 brief summary and analysis essay (100 pts.). This essay will be 2-3 pages in length and will require one MLA-formatted source citation. At the end of your essay, include that source on a correctly formatted work cited page employing MLA 8 (the 2016 version).
Essay one is a summary and analysis essay.
Consider your favorite intellectual pursuit, which can be anything from crossword puzzles to theoretical physics. Define, in your own words, what that pursuit is. If you use outside sources to help you in that definition, remember that at the university level of composition, tertiary sources such as generic dictionaries (e.g. Webster’s, Dictionary.com, Google Dictionary, etc.) and encyclopedias (e.g. Encyclopedia Britannica, Wikipedia, etc.) cannot be referenced in your essays! You may use, however, use professional reference works such as Black’s Law Dictionary, Mosby’s Medical Dictionary, Oxford Dictionary of Philosophy, etc.
Whatever topic you have chosen, investigate who has written on it before. Find your source in one of the academic databases available through the library. Choose one written piece that discusses your chosen topic or theme.
Write a 2-3 page evaluation of that piece. Summarize what the piece says, and then analyze it. Is the text comprehensive, or is the writer focusing on only one facet of the subject matter? Does the writer miss important facts? Is the written piece less than completely effective? Is the piece biased in any way? Be specific in your analysis. Is the source credible in this field? Is the source outdated? Remember that your task is to analyze, not to praise or condemn. So use the language of analysis (terms like “effective” and “comprehensive” are examples) rather than terms of emotional reaction (avoid words such as “good” or “bad”). Be specific in your responses and include correct in-text citations where needed (see OWL if you need to review MLA in-text citation style).
Remember also that this is an analysis of a written source, not of yourself. You should not appear in first person in your essay.
