The Concept of ‘The Greater Good’ in “The Lottery” and “The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas”

Final Exam
The final exam instructions and drop box are now open and accessible in MyCourses. Please read the instructions, although I’ll provide the primary guidelines here as well.

I’ll trust each of you to treat your final exam assignment as a formal test. Use your essay to convince me that you understand how to recognize and critique classic literature. Compose a four-paragraph essay using only your own knowledge and memory. Your essay should include enough detail to convince me that you know what you’re talking about, but I do not expect direct quotations in your paper. Moreover, I do not expect any external citations. The paper does not have a target word-count.

In simple terms, this is the final exam essay prompt: Among the works of literature that you studied during this class, which one was especially memorable and striking for you? Include specific details and examples to explain why the work of literature is artistic, beautiful, and moving.

Your final exam essay may be based on the same piece of literature that your literary analysis was based on; however, your final exam essay should be an entirely new essay, not just a revised version of your literary analysis paper.

I’ll trust you to spend no more than two hours writing your final exam essay. Remember that this is supposed to be a timed-writing test.

Since this is a timed-writing, my grading will primarily look for a clear, complete thesis sentence in the first paragraph and a thesis re-statement in the conclusion paragraph. The thesis should identify the author and title of the literary work and specifically what the essay is about. I’ll expect the two body paragraphs to begin with topic sentences. And I’ll expect to see specific examples or references to illustrate and support your body paragraphs.

First person perspective is acceptable within this essay, although I would prefer that you use objective third person perspective. This paper, like all academic papers, should not include second person perspective. Remember that the point of this paper is to explain something about the selected work of literature. The focus of the essay is not the Composition II class or you, the individual student.

I would be most happy to see all of the final exam essays submitted today or tomorrow. I will continue to accept and grade final exam essays on Wednesday or, if absolutely necessary, Thursday morning.

On a concluding note, I want to thank each of you for your forbearance with the unexpected difficulties posed by this semester. It’s been my privilege and pleasure to serve as your Composition II instructor. I hope that this class has given you some insight and skill into determining not just whether or not you like a piece of literature but specifically why you do or don’t appreciate the work.
