The student should compare and contrast their findings with their own Denomination/church and their own beliefs. The purpose of conducting the comparison or contrast is not to state the obvious but rather to illuminate subtle differences or unexpected similarities. Flesh these subtle differences/unexpected similarities and elaborate on your findings.
I have the Annotated Bibliography for the 5 sources which is:
“What We Believe and How We Practice Our Faith.” Friends General Conference, www.quakercloud.org/cloud/harrisburg-friends-meeting/pages/what-we-believe-and-how-we-practice-our-faith.
The quakercloud is a website that is owned by the quaker’s denomination. It serves the informative role of enlightening people about describing quackers’ beliefs and practices. The Quakers’ friend denomination embraces the basic Christian teaching principles. The Quakers believe in the direction of the holy spirit. As a result, they sometimes conduct the whole service in total silence as they expect from God (quaker n.p). Such mass is called unprogrammed service where there is no leader to lead the service. Moreover, the Quakers do not have a creed but rely on personal responsibility in the Quaker faith’s proclamation emphasized by prayer, faithfulness, service, and an outward statement of faith. As such, they believe in sanctity and preservation of life.
The Lutheran Church Missouri Synod
“Beliefs – The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod – The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod.” LCMS.org – The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod, 5 Jan. 2018, www.lcms.org/about/beliefs.
The LCSM.org is the official website for the Lutheran Church that informs the individuals about the Lutheran Church’s beliefs and its history. “Synod,” according to the Lutheran church, originates from Missouri Synod, Greek words which mean “walking together” therefore, They believe in the holy trinity. However, they have a Lutheran confession, which they acknowledge contains the right interpretation of the doctrines of the bible. The Lutheran church believes that salvation is gotten by grace alone irrespective of actions ( The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod n.p). They heavily rely on faith, grace, and scripture. Their stand on abortion is impressive because they believe that even in the case of incest or rape, abortion is still a sin regardless of it being legal.
Cohen, Cynthia B. “The Episcopal Tradition.”
The Episcopal is a result of the church of England and falls under the Anglican communion. It is a Christian denomination that is self-governed. The Episcopal believe in the incarnation as God transformed into a human body. Therefore, the human body is sacred and should be handled with care. Taking care of the body includes; physical health, seeking medical treatment, avoiding substance abuse, following healthy diets, and preventing care procedures. According to them, an adult can choose a different treatment method that they find morally acceptable. The regard for individual decision is centered on their belief in human dignity, “the church must make respect for freedom its most fundamental principle of action.” (Cynthia 5) The episcopal believe in responsible reproduction and thus encourage both family planning methods and sterilization
The Catholic Church
Ignaciuk, Agata, and Laura Kelly. “Contraception and Catholicism in the Twentieth Century: Transnational Perspectives on Expert, Activist and Intimate Practices.” Medical History 64.2 (2020): 163-172.
Catholic is the largest ancient religious institution with over two billion baptized members worldwide. Catholics believe in the holy trinity and catechism. Secondly, they believe in purgatory, where sins will be purged through suffering in the afterlife until one is perfect for reaching heaven. Effectively, Catholicism advocated for the purity of the heart and confession as a means for forgiveness. On health matters, the catholic church holds a stand against the use of contraception as it beats the purpose of sex for which it was intended (. It also bans abortion and instead advocates for the natural family planning method, such as safe days.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints
Conley, L. J. “Childbearing and childrearing practices in Mormonism.” Neonatal network: NN 9.3 (1990): 41.
Mormonism originated from a religious work, Book of Mormon, which Smith published. According to him, he had received divine assistance in translating the book from golden plates. Thus, his followers, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day-saints (LDS church), embraced Mormonism. LDS believes in the trinity. However, there is a distinction in their belief since God, the Father, and God the Son has perfect physical bodies where the spirit has no physical body. LDS believes that millions of spirits in heaven are waiting for a physical body to inhabit. Therefore, they prohibit the use of contraception( Conley, n.p). Selective abortion is thus forbidden, and offenders are excommunicated from the church case of rape and incest; the church allows abortion.
