The purpose of our journal assignments is to have students engage in and demonstrate higher levels of critical thinking: please be aware that your grade in this assignment will be awarded based on 1) your level of engagement with the prompt and 2) your level of demonstrated critical depth.
Journal Prompt: In our previous journal assignment students were asked to identify and unpack several symbols from Roald Dahl’s “Little Red Riding Hood” – before you make an argument however as to what you think Dahl was trying to say or critique in his story, we need to first do some research into Dahl’s life and the time period in which he lived…
For this assignment, students should research Roald Dahl and England in the 1970s (you might choose to look for major changes, social movements or upheaval, societal fears, etc.) and then list out the relevant information that you think may have impacted his writing or that he may have been responding to in his story.
Lastly, using both the symbols that you worked with in your previous journal entry along with the contextual information you provided here: what do you think Roald Dahl is trying to say or comment on about his life or British culture during the 1970’s through his story? Go beyond what we have already identified in class (the Wolf as a possible sexual predator).
The symbols I used previously are
1. The Hood Covering the Hair: The hood from her grandmother represents the coming of age for Little Red Riding Hood. Her cape also represents that she is not ready yet to be with men. It’s crazy that a fairly could mean all of this.
2. The Color Red: is often associated with love, seduction and so many other things with attracting men
3. The Forest: is often used in many fairy tales and it means wild and dangerous.
