Research Paper: What is it?

You are being asked to write a library research paper that provides a discussion of recent research literature on a current topic in the field of child psychology or child development. You will identify a question and locate relevant research articles drawn from peer reviewed journals within the field of child development, education or psychology. You will make use of the RU library to identify recent research and then you will critically evaluate what you read. The final paper should be synthesis of your findings presented in a manner that relates back to your initial question.

What is the goal of the assignment?

Learning how to use the research literature in the social sciences is an important skill for anyone working in education and the helping professions. To find this research, you will need to use appropriate search techniques and have access to peer reviewed journals in the social sciences. The research journals you will need are not readily available outside the library and its online resources. Your goal is to overview recent research on a topic you choose and to present the review in a written format.

This is an opportunity to learn more about a topic of special interest to you within the field of child development and also a chance and also to learn about professional and scholarly communications. Your paper is be written according to the guidelines of the American Psychological Association. The paper should be about 14 pages (250 words per page) excluding the reference list.

Writing :

…………………………..After reading things carefully, prepare an outline. Be sure you have kept good notes and include references in your notes and outline. If you are including a direct quote (which is not necessary) be sure you have the page number from the source. (Working with an outline helps to prevent accidental plagiarism).

After you have finished your organization you are ready to write. Begin with an introduction in which you present your question or problem. Then, you will briefly review the studies you deem most relevant to your question. You should have at least six. More would be better. Your comments about each study should help you clarify the research to the reader of your paper. You should plan to describe any special contributions the study makes towards understanding the question that is driving your work. If there are problems with the studies, you can mention those but do spend too much space describing and critiquing studies or you will not have enough space for a conclusion. Remember, you are using the studies to answer your question and you will need to provide some sort of synthesis or summary of the research towards the end of the paper.

End with a synthesis and a conclusion. Your paper should include a minimum of six empirical studies. Empirical studies include data and typically contain methods, results and discussion section. (Since your paper is not an empirical study, your paper does not need to contain sections labelled with these sub-titles.) You may include references to other papers, books or book chapters but those are not the focus of you paper and cannot count instead of the empirical articles. Don’t forget about the synthesis and conclusions to your paper. This section should relate back to your introduction and it should reflect the substance of your paper. At this point, your paper should be about 15 pages long.

At the end of the paper you need a reference list. This includes everything you cited– articles, books, conference papers and others. Your references must be presented in the format outlined in the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association. Please do NOT include items on the reference list that you did not reference in the paper. (You can tell me about any the other things you read in a separate communication if you feel it is important for me to know. However, it is not necessary.)

Finally, you need to write an abstract for your paper. Your abstract is a brief summary of the paper and it is about 200 words long. Your abstract should include the title of the paper as well as your name. We will post the abstracts and you can see what other people have done. There will also be a discussion thread in which you will make a post about your paper. After your post, you can comment on other papers.

Remember, the end goal is a paper 15 pages in length (excluding the reference list) in which you summarize the articles you have read to answer your question. The answer may not be clear cut but discuss what you have learned

Thank you so much for doing this paper. My mother is impaired due to a terrible can accident and my eldest daughter is in the hospital with covid and pneumonia.
