By the end of the novel, Pecola “stepped over into madness” (pp. 206). We the readers understand that Pecola has lost her sanity — she truly and fiercely believes that she has blue eyes — which we learn from Pecola’s conversation with her imaginary friend. ​Who or what is to blame for Pecola’s fate?
