How to write your story — apply your knowledge

You will write a story in the same as you did for the key point assignment in module 1 so this should look familiar to you. Think of this as a mini English paper with a topic sentence, body, and summary. I’ve written a sample to get you started. Your stories should look like mine. Below the story, I’ll break it down into it’s component parts as I did with the key point story. I chose this topic from the module 1 chapters so it wouldn’t interfere with your options from module 2 (you wouldn’t be able to use my topic for your story).

I found the topic of evocative forces very interesting. My 8-year-old son has a severe case of ADHD, part of his inborn temperament, which causes him to be impulsive. Because of his impulsivity, he is frequently doing things that get him into trouble. He is not a mean or bad kid. His temperament is such that it is difficult for him to manage his impulses. When he does something wrong, that evokes a disciplinary reaction. For example, one day, he and his sister were wrestling in the front seat of a parked rental car. They were both on the floor. He wanted to get back onto the seat, so he reached up to grab the inside rear-view mirror causing it to break free from the windshield. My first reaction was to ask him what happened. He denied doing anything. After a while, he told me what happened. Because he had done something wrong, I moved him to the backseat for a time out. This type of interaction between us occurs frequently. Each time it does, he gets angry with me which is likely to make him more impulsive. This is a story about an evocative force because his behavior of pulling the mirror off the windshield, caused buy his temperament, evoked a disciplinary reaction from me, the timeout, which made him angry and potentially causing more impulsivity.

My topic sentence: “I found the topic of evocative forces very interesting.” It is my first sentence.

· Example of a topic sentence for your reply: “I’m replying to Edna who wrote a story about rain.”

The body follows until the last sentence. I’ll break this down further next.

My summary: “This is a story about an evocative force because his behavior of pulling the mirror off the windshield, caused buy his temperament, evoked a disciplinary reaction from me, the timeout, which made him angry and potentially causing more impulsivity.” It is my last sentence.

· It is a summary of what’s in the body of your story. You can’t introduce new information here. All of the required info has to be in your body.

· Here is a template for your summary. “This is a story about ….. because…. Following “because” is how your story relates to the definition.”

How to write the body

1. Read the section in the book, watch the video lecture, read the slides, and any thing else in the class that describes your topic.

1. It’s important to cover all these materials to make sure you fully understand your topic and that your story/example isn’t already in the class.

2. Write down the definition from the book. Break it down into it’s component parts.

1. Do not include the definition in your post.

3. Each part of the definition should have at least one sentence in your body describing it.

4. Include the age and it has to match the age discussed in the chapter in which you find the key point. Use a number for the age and not a generic term like child or midlife.

Here’s how I wrote the story above

I wrote down the definition of evocative forces; separated it into parts; and then wrote text that describes each part. Finally, I composed the components into a paragraph. Pay attention to the detail I used.

1. Genetic temperamental tendencies (personality): “My 8-year-old son has a severe case of ADHD, part of his inborn temperament, which causes him to be impulsive. Because of his impulsivity, he is frequently doing things that get him into trouble. He is not a mean or bad kid. His temperament is such that it is difficult for him to manage his impulses.”

1. Note that I included the age and it’s a number. “My 8-year-old son has a severe case of ADHD, part of his inborn temperament, which causes him to be impulsive.”

2. His behavior produces (evokes) responses in other people: “When he does something wrong, that evokes a disciplinary reaction.

The principle that people affect one another (bi-directionality): “This type of interaction between us occurs frequently. Each time it does, he gets angry with me which is likely to make him more impulsive.” – his impulsiveness affected me and as a result, I punished him; punishing him made him angry creating more impulsive behav
