You are required to submit a formal research paper that argues a narrow and singular position in response to one of the following research questions:
• How can we explain the rise of the “alt-right” in Europe?
• Why has “peacekeeping” been such an important element of Canadian identity?
• Why do fewer and fewer Canadians think it is essential that Canada remain a democracy?
• How has Donald Trump been able to achieve such political success in the United States?
• What role have women played in revolutionary or independence movements?
• How has the rise of social media affected politics?
• How has China attempted to expand its global influence in recent years?
While your essay will be graded on a variety of factors, you should pay particular attention to these three:
Thesis: Each of the above Research Questions has many possible answers. However, your paper must advance a singular, narrow and contestable argument. As an academic writer, you are expected to provide your reader with an explicit statement of that argument in the introduction of your paper. This thesis statement should be only a single sentence long, and it should be phrased in a manner that is so clear and explicit that your reader will be able to identify it very easily (you can even bold or underline your thesis if you feel the need). Without a singular and clear thesis statement, your paper will have neither an identifiable argument nor a coherent structure.
As you compose your thesis, keep in mind these four aspects of an appropriate thesis that we went over in considerable detail during class:
• Unity: Your thesis must argue a single point
• Contestability: Your thesis must advance a contestable argument
• Scope: Your thesis must argue a narrow point
• Clarity: Your thesis must advance a clear argument
Analysis: Your paper must go beyond simple description. So, instead of merely describing a problem or situation you should advance an argument. Typically, this means your paper should be answering a “how” or “why” question instead of a “what” question. We have already discussed this expectation in class, but we will revisit it again.
Research: You are required to use at least five academic, peer-reviewed sources for this paper. As you know from our class discussion and previous assignments, peer-reviewed sources are books and journal articles that have been reviewed by academic experts before they are published. It is important you use these sources to ensure your paper is based on solid facts and sound academic theories rather than simple opinion.
